Current grants in effect through the North Alabama Highway Safety
Office
410 Driving Under the Influence Grant
The purpose of this grant is to utilize law enforcement overtime
and education efforts in the ten county region to reduce
alcohol-related crashes, injuries and fatalities. An extensive
public education campaign is being coordinated to enhance
enforcement efforts and further reduce alcohol-related crashes in
the region.
Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Grant
With these funds, NAHSO develops and coordinates the Alabama
Department of Economic Affairs, Law Enforcement Traffic Safety
Division (ADECA/LETS) Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP)
in 9 north Alabama counties. This project consists of overtime
enforcement hours targeted at high crash times, locations and
periods throughout the region to impact driver behavior and reduce
roadway crashes, injuries and fatalities. A complete education and
awareness campaign will be implemented to enhance enforcement
efforts of Alabama's traffic safety laws.
Section 406 Seatbelt Grant
Money from this grant will provide overtime funds for safety
belt enforcement in ten north Alabama counties. Enforcement will be
targeted to enhance the newly enacted Alabama Primary Safety Belt
Law. Education efforts will also aid in increasing usage rates in
the region. The goal of this and other enforcement and education
projects is to increase restraint usage to 85%.
Section 405 Child Passenger Safety Grant
Funds for this project will be used to continue implementation
the Child Passenger Safety (CPS) program in the 9 Community Traffic
Safety Program (CTSP) regions located across the state. This program
will provide additional training opportunities of the NHTSA approved
CPS 3-day training program will be available to each of the CTSP
regions. These additional technicians will allow for better coverage
statewide as the overall goal will be to have more child restraint
technicians available so that will lead to an increase in the child
restraint usage within the state as a whole.
